So What's All This About?

OK, so what is this place?

Seventh Sanctum is a site that provides random generators to inspire people, help them name characters, design settings, etc. It comes from Steve Savage's continuing obsession of decades - how randomization produces creativity.

Who's this Steve Savage Guy?

Steve's an IT professional since 1995, who's been involved in all sorts of technology, creativity, conventions, writing, and more. Go and find out more about him on the Author Page or his website.

I'm Steve by the way, so I'm just going to go all first person on you now.

I want to use an idea created by one of your generators in a professional work. Can I do that?

Yes. I make no claim of ownership over anything Produced by these generators. Roll up a bunch of results. Use them. Make a ton of money. Or use them in a fanfic or an RPG. Just remember it is possible for these generators to create things very close to existing properties others have created. Also a few of them work with existing properties anyway for humor or other purposes, so keep that in mind.

In short, if some idea you get from a generator here ends up as a published, professional work for money, it's yours. I have no claim on it. I can't own randomness and I do this page because I like helping people create.

Now if my site does help you get that million-dollar idea, I won't say no to credit or a nice gift. But no pressure ;)

Besides, these generators just help creativity. The creative action that turns a generator result into reality is yours.

Why was this page created?

Originally as a lark. I'd built a few generators over the years, but after creating an Anime Attack Generator I began to realize it'd be nice to have a place to put them. However, as I kept making them, I realized there were a lot I could build, and that people enjoyed them. This all originally started in 1999 or so.

Wait, you've been doing this since 1999

I get a bit obsessed now and then.

Actually doing this helps keep my technical skills honed, teaches me about creativity, and lets me learn about language. Frankly it's been well worth it and then some - and I get to meet great people.

What if I want to make my own generators?

I used to have a Library section, but frankly there's so many tools out there I actually took it down since it didn't seem necessary. But if you want to, write me and I'll send you some code!
